Some people think that there should be more responsibility on the part of teachers to relate well with their students. However, in my opinion, imparting knowledge to the students is a more significant task for educators than getting along well with them. This is because the central duty of teachers is to give students the knowledge they need for their futures, and in order to have an appropriate atmosphere for learning, teachers should emphasize professionalism over friendliness.

일부 사람들은 교사가 학생들과 잘 어울리도록 책임감을 더 가져야 한다고 생각한다. 그러나, 내 생각에, 학생과 잘 어울리는 것보다 학생들에게 지식을 전달하는 것이 교육자로서의 더 중요한 소임이다. 그 이유는 교사의 중심적 의무는 학생이 미래를 위해 필요한 지식을 주는 것이고, 학습에 적절한 분위기를 조성하기 위해 교사는 친근함보다는 전문성을 더 강조해야 하기 때문이다.

To begin with, the primary role of a teacher is to educate students on what they need to know for life later on. Teachers who are able to equip their students with knowledge will have a much greater impact on students' future success in both their further studies and employment. For example, the teacher who influenced me the most was my math teacher in high school. Even though I did not have as many opportunities to build a personal relationship with him as I did with my other teacher, I learned more about math than I ever thought I could through his expertise and guidance. The information I learned from him subsequently paid off. Thanks to him, I realized I had a talent for math and decided to pursue a career in engineering.

우선, 교사의 주된 역할은 훗날 살면서 알아야 할 것들에 대해 학생들에게 교육시켜 주는 것이다. 학생들이 지식을 갖추도록 할 수 있는 교사는 훗날의 학업과 취업과 같은 미래의 성공에 훨씬 더 큰 영향을 미칠 수 있다. 예를 들어, 나에게 가장 큰 영향을 미친 선생님은 고등학교 시절 수학 선생님이다. 비록 그 선생님과는 다른 선생님들과 그랬던 것처럼 개인적인 관계를 맺을 기회가 많지 않았지만, 나는 그분의 전문성과 지도를 통하여 내가 할 수 있으리라고 생각했던 것보다 수학에 대해 더 많은 것을 배웠다. 내가 선생님으로부터 배운 지식은 나중에 결실을 맺었다. 그 선생님 덕분에, 나는 내가 수학에 재능이 있다는 것을 깨달았고 엔지니어링 부문으로 진로를 정하기로 결심했다.

On top of that, teachers need to stress professionalism over intimacy to create a proper learning environment. Teachers who become too friendly with students actually hinder their learning, since it disrupts the classroom atmosphere. For instance, my sixth-grade teacher wanted to be thought of as a friend instead of an authority figure. By trying to befriend me and the other students, shd did not maintain the boundary needed for teachers to maintain control over the classroom while we had a lot of fun in class, she wasted a significant amount of class time every day settling the class down after she played with us during the break times.

게다가, 교사들은 적절한 학습환경을 조성하기 위해 친밀함보다는 전문성을 강조할 필요가 있다 학생들과 지나치게 친해진 교사들은 수업 분위기를 방해하게 되어 사실상 학습을 저해하게 된다. 예를 들어, 나의 초등학교 6학년 때 선생님은 권위적인 인물이 아닌 친구로 느껴지길 원했다. 그 선생님은 마치 나와 다른 학생들과 친구가 되기 위해 노력함으로써 학급의 질서를 유지하기 위해 선행님에게 필요한 경계선을 지키지 않았다. 우리는 수업 시간에 즐겁긴 했지만, 그 선생님은 휴식시간에 우리와 놀아준 후 학급을 진정시키기 위해 매일 상당한 수업 시간을 낭비했다.

To sum up, the principal function of a teacher is to ensure that students are equipped with the necessary expertise for the future, and teachers should be professionals rather than companions to maintain suitable surroundings for a scholarship. In this regard, I believe the capacity to give information is a more important skill for teachers than being able to empathize with students.

요약하자면, 학생들에게 훗날 필요한 전문성을 갖추도록 보장해야 하는 것이 교사의 주요한 기능이고, 교사는 학업에 적절한 환경을 유지하기 위해 친구보다는 전문이니 되어야 한다. 이러한 점에서, 나는 정보 전달 능력이 학생과 공감하는 것보다 교사에게 더 중요한 자질이라고 생각한다.
